Seven years ago a revolutionary item was released onto the gadgets market: Apple’s iPhone. The day before the release, on January the ninth 2007 Steve Jobs stood on the stage at San Francisco’s Moscone Center and proclaimed that “Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone”.

As he spoke, Jobs told the audience that “Today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products of this class. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device”. He wasn’t talking about three different devices, however; he was talking about one: the iPhone.

Today, seven years after his announcement, it’s hard to go a full day without seeing an iPhone. Take a walk to the local supermarket and you’ll see someone playing with one – students, professionals, school kids and elders. Commute to work and there will be somebody near you, tapping away on a six inch screen. Or maybe you’re an iPhone user yourself and have one beside you right now, attached to your USB port, being charged for the day ahead. You might even be reading this on your iPhone.

Many users of the iPhone have, at some time, been asked the question “How did you do that?” or similar and their reply will likely have been “I got the [product/company] app”. That final word has also become a part of everyday technology from games such as Angry Birds to websites such as Facebook and Spotify. Just visit the Apple Store, do a quick search and the app is yours to use until you get fed up of the cat and food pictures.

Happy 7th Birthday to the iPhone

There are, inevitably, those who are anti-iPhone, but it’s hard to deny that when Steve Jobs announced that Apple were going to release a revolutionary mobile phone, he was far from wrong. The iPhone has changed the way we look at technology and with the recent release of the iPhones 5S and 5C and rumours starting to arise in regards to the release of the iPhone 6, it’s going to be hard to stop looking, watching and hoping.
