Topsy Labs, a social analytics company which uses social networks such as Twitter to get real-time insight on recent business questions and studies current Twitter trends has been purchased by Apple for $200 million.

Apple has not announced why they bought the company, but a spokeswoman has said of the purchase “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans”.

Until now, Apple’s main association with social media was with Ping, the music-based social network which allowed users to post their favourite songs into social networks. Ping has since, however, been shut down due to lack of interest with users.

This purchase is Apple’s second in less than two weeks, following on from their purchase of PrimeSense, the Israeli company which provided the technology for the Xbox Kinect.
