TuneIn Radio app review

As a person of eclectic music tastes ranging from heavy metal one day to dance the next with other genres in between, I wanted an app which would provide me with music to suit my mood on demand and so, after flicking through a couple of app review mags, I settled on the TuneIn Radio app which is, essentially, a worldwide DAB radio on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. And, I must say, it is one of the best, most useful 69ps I’ve spent. Even more so than that can of cherry Coke I had for breakfast.

So, what exactly does this app do? Well, you’d expect it to play the radio, which it does almost perfectly (minus the odd mid-Shine on You Crazy Diamond buffer) but it also does things you wouldn’t expect it to do like go to sleep on one station and wake up on another. You may also be surprised to find that it has its own search engine so you can find a station specialising in ambient swells or psychedelic sounds. Within seconds you can be listening to Alice Cooper on Planet Rock or Martin and Su on Essex Heart. If you want it, TuneIn has it.

The app is fast, easy, organised and only has one banner ad (pay an extra couple of quid and this can be gone but, if you’re like me and enjoy your music in the background, this ad should be no problem). To the left of the screen are various locations (Home, My Presets, Settings and Location (presumably in case you forget where you are)) and radio station “types” (Music, Talk and Sport). To the right is a list of sub-types (when you have one of the types selected), a chronological list of presets which, additionally, gives a timetable of shows or a zoomable map which uses your wifi connection to find radio stations local to you.

Through my weeks of fiddling with TuneIn Radio, I’ve discovered and rediscovered a number of excellent radio stations which play equally excellent tunes from Foo Fighters and Iron Maiden to Stevie Ray Vaughan and 80s club classics. What’s also excellent is the ability to rewind the radio so you can re-hear that last song which caused you to scream out “Choooon!!” as the opening notes or verse kicked in. Not many apps and built-in radios can claim that ability, can they?

The usability of the app is top notch and so easy your gran could use it. The speed matches this and takes little to no time to change station albeit a few seconds to buffer. I’m not sure of the iPhone battery but I can assure you that the iPad lasts a very long time with the radio on constant play. Although I haven’t had the chance or time to test how long it really lasts I’d give it a good eight to ten hours. Perfect for the trip to work, lunch break and trip home or, if you’re like me, thirty minutes to get to sleep and fifteen minutes it takes to wake you up just before your alarm screams at you to climb out of bed.

After this analytic dissection of the TuneIn Radio app what do I have to say? Well, if you like your music, this is an app to get. Also, if you do get this app, have a bit of fun and search through the hundreds of radio stations available worldwide, you’ll no doubt find something to suit your needs, no matter what you feel like listening to. If I had to get rid of all but one of my downloaded apps, this is the one I’d keep, no doubt.
